“Wisconsin Raiders in Confederate Louisiana:
The Civil War Reminiscences of a Union General”

General Halbert E. Paine commanded the Fourth Wisconsin Regiment which left a devastating legacy in southeastern Louisiana. Paine describes events such as the occupation of New Orleans, the Battle of Baton Rouge, the assaults against Ponchatoula, La., and the Port Hudson campaign. In detailing these events, Paine unintentionally highlights the vast advantages enjoyed by the troopers in blue as well as the motives that led them to seek retribution against the Confederates. Samuel Hyde, Jr., who holds the Leon Ford Endowed Chair of History, will explain how the actions of Paine’s unit contributed directly to a painful legacy of violence in the Florida Parishes that endured for a half a century after the conflict. Book signing to follow.
