International House of Blues Foundation: Teacher Workshop
The International House of Blues Foundation invites all area teachers to attend a Blues SchoolHouse workshop. This workshop is designed if you plan to submit artwork in the annual Student Art Exhibit and Contest at the Columbia Theatre or if you are a music, history, language arts or general studies teacher interested in integrating content into your curriculum based on LA Standards outlined in this program format. Here is your chance to learn what the judges are looking for, receive a 120-page classroom guide that allows for easy content integration into your classroom that is aligned with state standards, and receive a preview of the Blues Schoolhouse program… and much more!
Exhibit Open: October 5 - 30, 2009 (Mon., Wed., Fri., 11:00 am – 4:00 pm) The International House of Blues Foundation invites students to enter artwork created with recycled or “found” materials in the 9th Annual Student Art Exhibit and Contest. All artwork will be displayed in the Columbia Theatre’s Grand Lobby. Participants will also travel to the House of Blues in New Orleans for the Blues Schoolhouse program, which includes a guided folk art tour and a live music presentation on the history of the blues. Missoula Children’s Theatre’s The Princess and the Pea Date: Friday, October 9, 2009Missoula Children’s Theatre returns to Fanfare with a script inspired by the classic tale, The Princess and the Pea. Missoula will cast 50-60 local school children to star in this theatrical production with a unique timeline. Missoula casts the young actors on Monday and gets to work right away teaching them lines, staging, songs and movement. Date: Wednesday, October 14, 2009William Chapman Nyaho, a Ghanaian American, is an accomplished pianist who has traveled all over the U.S., Europe and Africa to share his love of music. Nyaho’s memorable works are influenced by the music of Africa, South America and the Caribbean. Storyteller Dee Scallan Dates: Monday, October 19, 2009 & Tuesday, October 20, 2009Moby Pincher, the most kind-hearted crawfish in the south, invites your students to join him and his friends in a romp down the bayou to Crawfish Town! Louisiana native and author of the Moby Pincher book series, Dee Scallan, will travel to two local schools to share her stories about the plants, animals, insects and events unique to Louisiana… and she will bring along two fun guests: Moby Pincher and Cleveland Crawfish. Moby will talk to the students from an animatronics theater complete with flashing lights and moving parts, and Cleveland will lead the children in song and movement exercises. Get ready to dance to the “Swamp Rabbit Stomp”, the “Lighting Bug Boogie”, and other interactive songs. 30-35 students will even be asked to participate in the story as actors. Date: Wednesday, October 21, 2009Learn about music, musicians, and instruments of the concert band with the 65-member Southeastern Louisiana University Wind Symphony. Hear instruments played individually by students and faculty, and then all together in one of the most exciting bands in our region. From the music of “Harry Potter,” “The Wizard of Oz,” and John Philip Sousa, students will have a chance to see and hear the spectrum of wonders and opportunities the world of the concert band has to offer. Astronaut Robert “Hoot” Gibson Here’s your chance to see a real Astronaut! From light piston aircraft to thundering World War II fighters to supersonic jets to the space shuttle, Robert “Hoot” Gibson has flown 108 types of flying machines so far. A graduate of California Polytechnic State University with a degree in aeronautical engineering, and of the Naval Fighter Weapons School, this “topgun” has won countless military awards, including the Distinguished Flying Cross. With NASA, Gibson participated in five space flights, including the Columbia, the Atlantis and the Endeavor and has completed a total of 36 1/2 days in space. He was recently featured on the cover of the Smithsonian’s Air & Space magazine. This event is free and open to the public.
William Robison, “The Wrath of the King: Henry VIII, Cardinal Wolsey, and the Surrey Justices in Star Chamber” Date: Friday, October 30, 2009The “More-or-Less Annual Halloween Lecture” returns with the usual mix of scholarship, silliness, surprises, and sweets as the Head of History and Political Science discusses his research on a fierce local feud that spawned decades of corruption, disorder, and violence in Surrey and culminated in 1519 with Cardinal Wolsey’s carefully staged display of the young Henry VIII’s royal wrath in the court of Star Chamber. What does this have to do with Halloween? Oh, you are not going to believe it. And remember – costumes are encouraged! Candy tossing to follow. This event is free and open to the public. It is recommended for High School students taking English Literature or History.
